Grameenphone Launches GSMA's Mobile Connect Service Pilot in Bangladesh

Grameenphone has launched a trial of the GSMA's Mobile Connect service, a universal mobile-based authentication solution. The Mobile Connect service provides the ability to a mobile user to use his phone and SIM identity to log on into third party applications online without having to sign into each using separate authentication.

Grameenphone has initially selected 1000 users from the classified website - www.ekhanei.com - for the pilot project and plans to tie up with other leading e-commerce sites, classifieds and apps. Users will be able to securely log-on to www.ekhanei.com from their laptop or desktop by clicking on the Mobile Connect logo and typing their Grameenphone (GP) mobile number.

According to Grameenphone, the GSMA Mobile Connect solution enables customers to create and manage a universal identity that will securely authenticate them and allow them to safely access a range of mobile and digital services. It frees users from having to create and remember separate passwords and usernames for each website and service they access online via their mobile devices.

Allan Bonke, CMO, Grameenphone
With our continuous pursuit of ‘Internet for All’, we want to harness the power of the internet to set an example on how easily users can access e-commerce sites and avail their desired products. Although Mobile Connect is in its primary stages, we believe that it has the potential to be an essential option for easier and affordable online transactions.

Marie Austenaa, VP and Head, Personal Data & Mobile Identity Programme, GSMA
Mobile Connect addresses the familiar problem of having multiple passwords for multiple websites by offering a single, trusted, mobile phone-based authentication solution that gives consumers greater control of their data. The service is gaining momentum around the world with 17 mobile operators already preparing to launch this year and we welcome the addition of Grameenphone Ltd to this leading group.
