Yahoo has acquired content delivery network provider PeerCDN for its technology to deliver site resources like images, videos and downloads via a peer-to-peer network of website visitors using WebRTC, a real-time communication technology. TechCrunch reports that the acquisition of the startup CDN provider is timely for Yahoo which has been having issues with its mail system. The report also says that the new technology could be very useful with native Yahoo audio and video content especially as Yahoo prepares to provide a lot of rich media content, which can becomes a costly affair under its current CDN technology. The PeerCDN technology is able to defray that cost away from the content provider’s servers.
