Nokia, Tuesday announced its Passive Optical LAN (POL) solution that is designed to provide operators and enterprises a faster, more cost-effective way to deploy local area networks (LAN) at a time when gigabit services, WiFi, the Cloud and high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming and file sharing are reshaping today’s network needs. Nokia claims that the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) fiber-based technology can provide up to 50 percent cost savings over traditional copper-based Ethernet LAN.
Nokia said that it is collaborating with IBM, KDDI and others to address needs of enterprises and sectors including banking, manufacturing, healthcare and hospitality. Delivering virtually unlimited data capacity, the POL is also capable of supporting all video, voice and data requirements over a single fiber optic cable, said Nokia.
