Cobham Wireless, today announced that its intelligent digital DAS (idDAS) was deployed at the Berlin’s Fan Mile during the 2016 New Year’s Eve. The Fan Mile is a carnival/public viewing that is a mile long stretching through the centre of Berlin to the Brandenburg Gate. The deployment enables Vodafone and Telefónica customers to access high-bandwidth 4G (LTE) services on the thoroughfare for the first time, in addition to 3G (UMTS).

According to Cobham Wireless, on its first day of full operation, the system successfully supported over one million visitors attending the party, slated as the world's biggest New Year's Eve gathering. With the deployment of the idDAS, hundreds of thousands of visitors attending future events at the venue including the screening of the 2016 UEFA European Championship will be able to enjoy reliable cellular coverage.

The deployment of the idDAS by Cobham Wireless which was implemented together with their Berlin-based integration partner SXF-Plan saw the company taking a base station hotel 25km away from the site and connecting it, via fibre cabling, to 27 idDAS digital remote units concealed from view in underground enclosures along the length of the street and around the Brandenburg Gate.

This revolutionary Cloud-RAN supporting technology has the power to bring inner-city cellular coverage to a new level, providing close to 100% coverage in areas traditionally suffering from environmental or capacity issues.

Following the successful launch of this service we will now look to expand the scope of the system to utilise the full capabilities of this technology, and shift the capacity from the base station hotel to other sites as required.
