Chip maker giant, Qualcomm via its subsidiary Atheros has announced that it will start adopting the new 802.11ad standard, the latest and fastest wifi standard that boasts transfer speeds of up to 7Gbits per second, in its products. Qualcomm is collaborating with several companies to release an end-to-end solution featuring the 802.11ad standard comprising smartphones from Chinese outfit LEtv, access points and routers from Elecom, NEC and TP-Link, and notebooks from ACER and ASUS.

By utilizing a portfolio of its existing platforms with its QCA9500 802.11ad chipset, Qualcomm aims to enable its customers to easily design the most advanced wireless connectivity features into a variety of products. By offering up to 4.6 Gbps PHY and bringing bandwidth rich 60GHz spectrum to Wi-Fi’s fold, 802.11ad is one of the tools that can address the burgeoning data demand in homes, enterprises and carrier networks, said Qualcomm.

Some of the 11ad use cases include lag-free docking and screen mirroring, 4k streaming to multiple devices, near instant access to multimedia and fast uploads and downloads.

Rahul Patel, senior vice president and general manager, Connectivity, Qualcomm Technologies
Qualcomm Atheros was the first to commercialize 802.11ac wave 2 with MU-MIMO, providing up to 3x greater performance. We are once again leading the industry by bringing multi-gigabit, high capacity connectivity with our 802.11ad multi-band technology.

Mamoru Nagatani, vice president, Platforms, NEC
Wi-Fi has become the lifeline of enterprise and carrier networks today. 802.11ad, through its multi-gigabit speeds and significant increase in capacity, can revolutionize enterprise Wi-Fi connectivity
