Brazilian telecom operator, Nextel announced that it has secured an additional 4G spectrum in a bid by the National Telecommunications Agency, Anatel in the 1.8 GHz band. The operator paid 455 million reais(USD$115) for the spectrum, with a premium of 1.15 percent over the minimum price set by Anatel, according to a statement by Nextel on Thursday.
The new spectrum will allow the operator to roll out its 4G LTE service in São Paulo and Greater Sao Paulo, expanding from Rio de Janeiro where it rolled out the service last year. Based on the latest data from Anatel, Nextel has 670,000 4G customers, ranking fifth place behind Vivo, TIM, Claro and Hi.
