Service Agility is Driving the Adoption of White Box Switches and SDN by Cloud Providers -Pica8

James Liao, President and CEO of Pica8, an open software-defined networking (SDN) firm believes that software defined network solutions are essential for modern cloud infrastructure. He took part in a recent AlwaysOn panel discussion debate entitled “Does the Rise of Open Cloud Signal the Demise of the Vendor Lock-in Infrastructure Model?” held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

Liao spoke on a panel that also included executives from Robin Systems and GridGain, and discussed such topics as the pros and cons of single-vendor cloud solutions, the rise of SDN and white box solutions, and the future of cloud infrastructure.

“Service agility and the need for cost-effective scaling are driving the adoption of white box switches and SDN software by cloud providers,” said Liao. “Major providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are leading the way in implementing SDN, and they are building a model that smaller cloud providers will adopt over the coming months and years.”
