Ericsson, in an announcement, said that it will continue spearheading the development of the 5G system as the coordinator of the new METIS-II project, a 5G infrastructure public-private partnershipwhich co-funded by the EU H2020 research program that aims to develop the overall 5G radio system design and the roadmap for its standardization.

The new METIS-II project which comprises of an international consortium consisting of 23 partners from all regions around the world will provide a framework that will facilitate common evaluation of 5G radio access network concepts, apart from recommending the 5G spectrum roadmap. It will also lead to the preparation of concerted actions towards regulatory and standardization bodies.

According to Ericsson, the METIS II project will leverage the success of METIS, the first integrated 5G project also driven and coordinated by Ericsson. In addition, Ericsson will take the lead as the technical coordinator of the mmMAGIC (Millimetre-Wave Based Mobile Radio Access Network for Fifth-Generation Integrated Communications) project, which develops and designs new concepts for mobile radio access technology for deployment in the 6-100 GHz range.
