Vodafone Australia, last week announced that it has reached a major milestone in its core network upgrade. The new core network currently serves all of the 4G data sessions in Vodafone Australia's network, supporting its nationwide 4G network which covers 96 percent of the country's metropolitan population. The upgrade to replace Vodafone Australia's legacy core network was undertaken by Ericsson after it was awarded the contract in August last year .

With the new core network, the Operator is also planning to introduce Voice over LTE (VoLTE) later this year as VoLTE will deliver a superior call experience with reduced connection times, and will enable users to enjoy high definition audio quality on their calls. VoLTE will also allow customers to stay on the 4G network when taking or receiving voice calls, instead of switching to 3G, especially when they are accessing the Internet on 4G.

Benoit Hanssen, Chief Technology Officer, Vodafone
All Vodafone customers using 4G to download, upload and stream content on their devices are now connected to our new core network. Our new core network offers greater agility and flexibility, and for customers that means a better 4G experience. Through our investment, we’ve created a strong, stable and reliable network, and we’re now building on that with the expansion of our new world-class core network.
