Opera Software ASA, provider of Internet products and services, in its recent report said that mobile users in India who used its Opera Mini browser to connect to internet used 75% less mobile data in the first half of this year. According to Opera, its advanced compression technology allowed users in the country to save up to Rs2.1 billion (approximately USD34.7 million) in the first six months of 2014.
The report looked at savings made on different mobile operating systems and found that Java-based phones users saved 81% on their monthly data usage, while Android phone and iOS users saved 68.5% and 62% respectively. Opera Mini's compression is able to shrink webpages down to as little as 10% of their original size, resulting in reduction in data consumed by 90%, said Opera. The browser also enables webpages to download faster in places with poor connectivity and when users are on roaming, added Opera.
According to Opera, its Opera Mini mobile browser is compatible with more than 3000 mobile devices, making it popular in markets such as India which boasts a wide variety of device brands, models and operating systems. At present, India takes the largest share globally in terms of the number of Opera Mini users.
"We understand how precious mobile data is for Indian consumers, and that’s why our servers work very hard to shrink every bit of data possible for Opera Mini users. It’s indeed gratifying to see that this translates into such gigantic savings for our Indian users. This is, however, only the tip of the iceberg. We are confident Opera Mini can help Indians save billions more.".
