VoLTE services will account for nearly $120 Bbllion in annual revenue by 2020, according to SNS Research's latest report. Powered by IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) architecture, VoLTE brings a host of benefits to mobile operators ranging from the ability to refarm legacy 2G and 3G spectrum to offering their subscribers a differentiated service experience through capabilities such as HD voice and video telephony.

SNS Research estimates the years 2015 to 2020 to witness a growth of 36% (CAGR) in this market. Although voice services will constitute a major proportion of the US$120 billion expected at the end of this tenure, over 12% of the revenue will be driven by video calling and supplementary services, said SNS Research.

According to GSA (Global Mobile Suppliers Association), March this year saw 16 operators in 7 countries launching HD voice service leveraging the VoLTE technology, compared to only 3 launches in March last year. GSA expects commercial VoLTE deployments to surge this year as more Operators jump on the bandwagon to introduce VoLTE. In its report update released earlier this year, GSA reported that 80 operators in 42 countries, that is 22% of operators, are investing in either VoLTE deployments or studies/trials.
