As day three of MWC Shanghai 2023 comes to a close, Ariana Lynn, Senior Analyst at The Fast Mode spoke to Xiao Zhengcang, the CTO of Whale Cloud International, a software solution and IT services firm based in China. Xiao reveals his predictions for the telco space this year and discusses the company’s participation at the event.

Ariana: What are some of the new challenges expected to impact the telecoms industry in 2023?

Xiao: The telecommunications industry continues to evolve and face challenges due to various reasons, such as changing customer demands, technological advancements, economic trends and intense competition from new entrants. We believe 2023 will mark an acceleration of 5G adoption and monetization. As 5G continues to spread and become the new standard for wireless communication, Communications Service Providers (CSPs) will keep investing in new infrastructure to support it, and deal with the demand for high-bandwidth applications and services that 5G enables.

Cloud is another major telecom industry trend for 2023. We’ve witnessed a surge in CSPs beyond connectivity initiatives from around the world, and data sovereignty legislation is playing a role in driving CSPs to re-evaluate their cloud strategy. Additionally, the development of the metaverse is likely to have significant implications for the telecoms industry. This requires CSPs and players to invest in new infrastructure and technologies, and develop new services and business models in support of the emerging metaverse economy.

Ariana: What are the key event themes that you will be involved in?

Xiao: One of the key themes at MWC Shanghai we focus on is the metaverse. Making the metaverse a reality will require significant advancements in network latency, symmetrical bandwidth and overall speed of networks and the current network infrastructures will need to evolve to accommodate the upcoming metaverse platform.

In the session “Building the Metaverse-Ready Network”, we shared insights on how new technologies, e.g. next-generation computing first network, can help make the metaverse a “real” experience.

Ariana: What are your showcases/highlights at the event?

Xiao: At this year’s MWC Shanghai, Whale Cloud highlighted our strategy “STRATO” to provide our customers with a holistic view of digital transformation, enabling them to launch their business in the stratosphere stably and sustainably. It’s an exciting time as CSPs are seeking ways to diversify their service revenues and expand into new areas to drive growth. A partner with industry know-how and practices in both traditional connectivity businesses and diversified new businesses will lead the path to success. Whale Cloud is the trusted partner to secure core connectivity and win over new sectors for CSPs, for example, eCommerce, Fintech and cloud. We were also thrilled to showcase our latest solution suite and shared success stories in both core connectivity and beyond connectivity businesses to address the evolving needs of our customers.
