Ahead of MWC Shanghai 2023 taking place this week from the 28th to the 30th of June, Ariana Lynn, Senior Analyst at The Fast Mode spoke to Simon Ng, VP of Carrier Relations and Operations at PaaSoo, a leading bulk SMS and voice solutions provider for enterprises. In this brief interview, Simon explores key themes he expects to see at the event, and some of the potential challenges and trends in the telco space in 2023.

Ariana: How will this year’s MWC Shanghai be different from MWC Shanghai 2022?

Simon: The event in 2022 was impacted by the pandemic. This year, we expect to see some general insights on potential trends, especially on emerging technologies. MWC Shanghai 2023 might highlight advancements in areas such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI). This year will focus on feature product launches, demonstrations, and showcases from various technology sectors, including mobile devices, smart home solutions, automotive technology, and more.

Ariana: What are some of the new challenges expected to impact the telecoms industry in 2023?

Simon: There are some potential challenges that could impact the telecoms industry in coming years based on ongoing trends, as the industry focuses on Modernization. To support the increasing demands of 5G, IoT, and other emerging technologies, telecoms will need to modernize their infrastructure or platforms, including upgrading and expanding fixed and mobile networks, and deploying edge computing solutions and digital transformation. These investments require significant capital and planning, posing challenges for telecom companies. The telecoms industry continues to evolve from traditional voice and data services to a more diversified ecosystem of digital services and solutions. Telcos will need to adapt their business models, explore new revenue streams, and form strategic partnerships to remain competitive in this changing landscape. The demand for skilled professionals in new areas such as AI becomes higher.

Ariana: What emerging trends and technologies do you expect to unfold in the region’s telco space?

Simon: Some emerging trends and technologies have been shaping the telecoms industry and are expected to continue influencing the region's telco space. AI and machine learning (ML) technologies have the potential to revolutionize the telecoms industry. Operators can leverage AI and ML to optimize network performance, predict and prevent outages, personalize customer experiences, automate processes, and enhance cybersecurity. Telecom companies will continue to prioritize customer experience by leveraging advanced technologies. Personalized services, chatbots, virtual assistants, and self-service platforms will become more prevalent, allowing customers to manage their accounts, troubleshoot issues, and access support more conveniently.
