Orange, Wednesday in partnership with Ericsson demostrated peak rates beyond 10Gbps in a live 5G trial. The trial is part of the 5G partnership announced by Ericsson and Orange in October 2016.

"The significant increase in throughputs, including on the move, is one of the promises of 5G. These ever-increasing speeds will be needed for new use cases such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, or the needs of business environments. Thanks to our 5G partnership with Ericsson, we are preparing the future of networks," says Alain Maloberti, senior vice president of Orange Labs Networks.

Franck Bouétard, Head of Ericsson France, says: "In order to support Orange in the preparation of its future network, we are pioneering the possibilities offered by 5G. Some new features are already available like software plug-ins to improve customer experience as regards mobile broadband, fixed wireless internet and IoT, and now this pushes the boundaries of innovation and potential."

In a separate development, both Orange and Ericsson have recently signed a partnership agreement with PSA Group, a French automaker to conduct a 5G technology pilot project for automotive applications. The connected car partnership aims to leverage 4G to 5G technology evolution to address connected vehicle requirements such as intelligent transport systems (ITS), improve road safety, and enable new automotive and in-car services.
