UAE-based operator, Etisalat this week announced the completion of the Mena region’s first 5G mobile technology live trial using millimetre wave (mmWave).

The trial during Gitex Technology Week exhibition in Dubai saw a remarkable 36Gbps peak rate using a 2GHz bandwidth at E-Band frequency. The trial aimed to explore higher spectrum efficiency at high frequency band for 5G enhanced mobile broadband.

5G is all about “ubiquitous computing”, meaning the ability to access applications from any platform, anytime, anywhere. The network is expected to facilitate smart vehicles, transport and infrastructure and allow for the critical control of remote devices.

The new 5G network will help Etisalat cope with the massive digital content explosion  anticipated in the next few years.

"Our field test at Gitex is a significant step in validating the performance of 5G in high frequency bands. It has refreshed Etisalat's understanding to the capabilities of the technology, which Etisalat believes will deliver capacity and connectivity beyond anything we’ve even come close to today," the company said.
