After Orange's $3.8 billion takeover of Spain's Jazztel that brings on-board more than 5 million households with Fibre-to-the-Home(FTTH) connections, the Operator last week announced initial testing of a new ultra-broadband technology, XG-PON over the existing last mile fiber network. The operator said that it has successfully tested the new technology on live network which allows four times faster download speeds and doubles the upload speeds for fixed broadband fiber customers. Essentially, the XG-PON technology allows transmission of up to 1Gbps per customer.

The XG-PON technology can also be used to serve as a backhaul to support mobile broadband network, allowing maximization of the 4G mobile network transmission rates.

The Operator is also in the beta testing of the next FTTH technology, the twdm-PON(Time Wavelength Division Multiplexing - PON), which promises to quadruple speeds both downstream and upstream.
