SK Telecom has joined the LoRa Alliance, a non-profit organization that aims to develop standards for the Low Power Wide Area Networks(LPWAN) technology which can be utilized in developing IoT-related products, reported Yonhap News Korea. SK will be the first Asian member of the global alliance. SK Telecom will leverage the LoRa Alliance technology to develop its Internet-Of-Things (IoT) network for 'Small Things', connecting small-sized objects that measure and process a small amount of simple information, such as temperature, humidity, weight and location.

The LoRa Alliance is created early this year, marking a consolidated effort by industry leaders to standardize the LPWAN technology that is being deployed around the world to enable IoT, machine-to-machine (M2M), smart city and industrial applications. The Alliance members aim to drive the global success of the LoRa protocol (LoRaWAN) by sharing knowledge and experience to ensure interoperability between telecom Operators. Todate, the LoRA Alliance boasts big names such as Actility, Cisco, Eolane, IBM, Kerlink, IMST, MultiTech, Sagemcom, Semtech, and Microchip Technology, as well as large Operators including Bouygues Telecom, KPN, SingTel, Proximus, Swisscom, and FastNet (part of Telkom South Africa).
