Semiconductor firm, Altera and two other firms - Brain4Net and CertusNet - have joined the OPNFV Project, Linux Foundation’s Open Platform Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Project as Silver members. The project has united over 100 developers from service providers and commercial suppliers to collaborate on the development of a carrier-grade, integrated, open source flexible platform for NFV. The community recently delivered its first software release, Arno, which sets the foundation necessary to build the NFV reference platform.

Altera which was bought by Intel for $16.7 billion last month offers field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), system-on-chips (SoCs) and complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs). Meanwhile, Brain4 Net specilizes in providing network orchestration and control solution platforms for multivendor networks and CertusNet provides elastic network/cloud services.

Heather Kirksey, director, OPNFV
Collaboration is key to accelerating the open source software development of NFV, and with Arno now available, we’re seeing that vision materialize. We look forward to the contributions our newest members will bring to the community with their knowledge of FPGA technologies and orchestration and control solutions for SDN and VNF.

Francis Chow, vice president and general manager of Altera Communications Business Unit
As Altera continues to innovate and offer competitive products and technologies to meet the demands of future networks, we find it important to support OPNFV. By leveraging our knowledge of FPGA technology for the communications industry, we add value to creating the de facto industry standard NFV platform.
