XL Axiata, one of the largest cellular operators in Indonesia for consumer and machine-to-machine (M2M) services, has selected Cisco Virtualized Packet Core (VPC) to cater for its rapidly expanding data traffic. XL Axiata has reported 136 percent year-on-year data traffic growth, with data subscribers crossing over half of its 60 million subscriber. The service provider has also seen strong growth in their data smartphone users, reaching 14.6 million users as of September 2014.

According to Cisco, by implementing Cisco Virtualized Packet Core (VPC), XL Axiata has become the first to implement the Cisco solution in Asia Pacific and Japan.  Cisco said that its VPC, coupled with Cisco Evolved Services Platform (ESP), enabled XL Axiata to turn up new services in minutes and easily scale operations. XL Axiata also tested Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS) servers as a compute platform to deploy Cisco VPC and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN). Cisco VPC combines all packet core services—for 4G, 3G, 2G, Wi-Fi, and small cell networks—into a single solution, providing network functions as virtualized services to enable customers to scale capacity and introduce new services much faster and more cost-effectively.

Cisco claims that the VPC is the industry's first hardware platform and hypervisor-independent solution that combines Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN).

As one of Indonesia's leading cellular service providers, offering services such as voice, SMS, data, and other value-added mobile telecommunication services with an extensive network around the country, our customers count on XL to deliver their mobile communications whenever and wherever they need it with a high quality of service. The Cisco virtualized Packet Core solution gives us the flexibility we need to turn on new services quickly for our valued customers.

Sancoyo Setiabudi, Managing Director, Cisco in Indonesia
In the recent Cisco Mobile Visual Networking Index forecast, Indonesia was highlighted as a country that would experience a 10-fold growth in mobile data traffic from 2014 to 2019. The key factors driving this surge in connectivity are: increased mobile penetration rates, a significant increase in ‘smart' connections and the rapid growth of 4G connectivity. With Cisco solutions for the virtualized packet core, XL Axiata is able to achieve added flexibility, increased agility and the service velocity needed for implementing new dynamic service offerings for a connected Indonesia. We are thrilled about XL Axiata's continued confidence in us, and we look forward to working together to deliver industry-leading services and transforming our Indonesia.
