IONOS last Friday announced it is enabling customers of its Compute Engine cloud platform to deploy vCPU (virtual central processing unit) server instances in their virtual data centers.

The vCPU option complements the high-performance dedicated instances previously offered exclusively, and now offered as the Dedicated Core option. Both variants are finely configurable in terms of the number of vCPUs or cores and RAM size. vCPU instances can, however, also be selected in pre-configured T-shirt sizes.

The price for the new vCPU option is $0.0310 per hour per vCPU and is billed by the minute. The price for vCPU RAM and block storage remains the same as the Dedicated Core option at $0.0071 per gigabyte per hour. The vCPU prices are up to 25% lower than comparable offers from U.S. hyperscalers.

vCPU server instances are particularly suitable for standard workloads. Dedicated cores, on the other hand, are ideal for applications with performance-critical workloads. These include high-performance computing, big data, real-time analytics, ERP systems or websites with high traffic volumes.

Users of the IONOS Cloud Platform can deploy both vCPU and Dedicated Core options in the same virtual data center. The vCPU option is available immediately in data centers in Las Vegas, Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Paris, London, and Logrono.
