The UK’s National Grid, one of the world’s largest publicly-listed utility companies, has selected EXFO for an innovation pilot scheme. EXFO will provide monitoring for its fibre network health assessment in the UK, supporting the nation’s goal of becoming net-zero by 2050.

The National Grid has deployed an overhead fibre optic operational telecommunications network across its electricity transmission infrastructure that carries critical information essential for secure and efficient utility operations.

EXFO’s technology will assess the operational condition of fibre network while predicting its remaining technical lifespan and potential points of failure or weakness.

Part of the nation’s Critical National Infrastructure, the UK’s operational telecommunications network has been operating for over 30 years. The age of the system, along with the environmental impacts make faults and failures harder to detect.

The National Grid anticipates that the monitoring and fault detection can deliver a net benefit of as much as US$3.5m.
