Telkomsel, as the leading digital telecommunications company and the first 5G service provider in Indonesia, collaborated with Ericsson and Qualcomm to launch a trial of a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service using 5G extended-range technology with a bandwidth of 800 MHz at 26GHz millimeter-wave (mmWave) as permitted by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia. The broad reach, high capacity, and low latency capabilities of 5G mmWave offer great potential for applying FWA technology and driving the equity, improvement, and acceleration of national digital transformation.

The results show that the extended-range 5G millimeter-wave at the 26 GHz frequency can be one of the valuable solutions for Fixed Wireless Access services in supporting the development of various digital solutions. Based on the test results, the download speed can reach a peak throughput of 1 Gbps, although the distance has reached 7.9 kilometers to the Lake Toba area, North Sumatra. The Lake Toba area itself is one of the Super Priority Tourism Destination (DPSP) points with 5G services as appointed by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf).

The equitable and equivalent quality digital connectivity built by Telkomsel in Indonesia is expected to continue to be improved to support national digital transformation, create new jobs, and improve the national economy more inclusively. This initiative will help businesses in Indonesia to simplify operations and reduce costs, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity. 5G technology can also be important in achieving Indonesia's digital inclusion goals, especially in delivering leading-edge digital connectivity, including in remote rural areas.

Director of Planning and Transformation Telkomsel, Wong Soon Nam
Telkomsel, as the leading digital enabler in Indonesia with the widest digital connectivity coverage, continues to strive to unlock opportunities for national economic progress to support the transformation of the digital lifestyle of the Indonesian people, through the availability of access to the latest mobile broadband technology. Now, together with our infrastructure and technology provider partners, Ericsson and Qualcomm, Telkomsel continues collaborating to remain relevant in every application of the latest network technology, one of which is through trials of the application of 5G mmWave network technology in the Lake Toba area.

Head of Ericsson Indonesia, Jerry Soper
Ericsson is delighted to continue partnering with Telkomsel to push the boundaries of 5G technology. We have supported Telkomsel since the first 5G trial in Indonesia in 2017 and throughout their journey, leading to the commercial launch in 2021. This recent FWA trial with extended-range 5G mmWave could help address the challenges of bridging the digital divide and reducing the carbon footprint of mobile networks.
