Ekinops in partnership with the leading networking hardware provider, Lanner Electronics, has deployed an immersive virtualization environment for staff and students at l'École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), a constituent of the Université du Québec network.

Ekinops has delivered a bespoke, turnkey package to support teaching and research with its OneOS6-LIM and vRouter to create a virtualized compute environment that runs multiple VNFs, including Ekinops SD-WAN services.

The new NFV solution will operate on Lanner Electronics Intel x86 based “whitebox solution”, thanks to the open architecture of Ekinops OneOS6-LIM Middleware. Supporting the day-to-day management and providing a simple, flexible, user-friendly interface for teaching purposes is Ekinops’ OneManage, Design Studio & Director.

The new virtualization solution will be studied by telecoms graduate students to enhance their understanding of key sector technology trends, including virtualization and network optimization that support the connectivity requirements of cloud and edge computing. In addition, the solution will be used by researchers at ÉTS to support lab-based R&D projects exploring future network access solutions.

Sven Freudenfeld, CTO Lanner Electronics, North America
Network virtualization is part of the network transformation in telecom and enterprises as foundation to leverage the 5G infrastructure. Using ready for deployment white box appliances accelerates the time to deployment and revenue. The business model of software defines networking (SDN) introduces new business models and opportunities for several vertical markets. Providing this infrastructure to the research community provides a foundation for new developments.

Dr Kim Khoa Nguyen, Professor at ÉTS
A central pillar of our teaching and research strategy at ÉTS is to provide students and researchers hands-on practical experience enabled by our industry partnerships. We are very excited to be working with the Ekinops and Lanner virtualization solution, drawing on their combined experiences deploying world-leading, field-proven technologies. The new environment exposes students and staff to the most advanced and innovative tools for teaching and applied research and will ensure we continue to equip tomorrow’s specialists with the skills to meet the sector’s evolving connectivity needs.
