In the recent 2022 NGON WDM forum, WOM, a carrier from Chile, shared its strategic plan and vision for optical network construction with industry partners and the media.

WOM also provided testimonials about Huawei's all-optical Autonomous Driving Network (ADN) solution and said that they look forward to cooperate with Huawei to usher in a new ADN era of optical networks in Chile.

At the forum, Edison Alfaro Leon, Director of the Network Core and Transmission Department of WOM, Chile, delivered a keynote speech entitled "WOM' s Next Generation Optical Autonomous Network", and outlined the optical network construction strategy of WOM in Chile. Edison said that WOM will introduce the latest network architecture concepts in the industry and work with Huawei to build an intelligent and automated optical network across Chile, leading various industries in Chile into a new optical network era.

As a new carrier in Chile, WOM boasts of more than 80 customer service centers and 7 million subscribers in Chile after just a few years of development. WOM's customer-centric business philosophy has helped them acquire an excellent reputation and propelled them to the first place in the Customer Experience PXI Ranking from 2019 to 2021. According to Edison, although WOM has the fastest-growing network infrastructure in Chile, it is not easy to deploy an optical network throughout the country due to Chile's complex geographical environment.

Chile has a geographical landscape of more than 4000 kilometers from its northern tip to its southern tip, spanning 38 latitudes with multiple altitudes and climates. In the optical network construction planning of WOM, the networks should cover the areas with extreme climates and complex terrain, such as the Antarctic region of Chile. Therefore, the optical network construction in Chile has higher requirements on device performance. To make the best use of optical fiber resources, WOM will introduce Huawei's optical cross-connect (OXC) and 400G technology solutions to deploy optical transport networks (OTNs) on the metropolitan area networks (MANs). By then, the 3D-mesh backbone core links and fixed mobile convergence (FMC) networks will be completed and OTNs will be deployed on MANs.

In Latin America, Chile has its own unique advantages in network transmission rate and enterprise network application. With the prevalence of digitalization, optical network O&M efficiency and quality have gradually become the key to development. Edison pointed out two strategic directions in WOM’s collaboration with Huawei, focusing on network automation deployment. By introducing Huawei's all-optical ADN solution, Huawei iMaster Network Cloud Engine (NCE), the core component, will enable brand-new optical network O&M experience.

For the strategy of improving optical network O&M efficiency, Huawei iMaster NCE provides five high-value features to help. First, the optical network sub-health prediction will help to achieve automatic identification of fiber performance deterioration with an accuracy of 95%, preventing potential faults. Second, the combination of EOTDR and GIS maps will enable precise fault locating and rectification of optical fiber faults, shortening the fault locating duration from hours to minutes. The optical network resource assurance enables precise network expansion and shortens the service time to market (TTM) from weeks to one day. The optical network health assurance feature visualizes live-network resources and transform the manual monitoring to real-time monitoring. In addition, the accuracy of shared risk link group (SRLG) risk detection exceeds 90%, which will further effectively reduce the risks of co-cable faults and service interruption. With these features, WOM will be able to effectively utilize and protect optical fiber resources while implementing automated and efficient O&M of optical networks.

In line with the optical network quality monetization strategy of WOM, Huawei iMaster NCE will help to improve optical network quality and increase revenue. First, the agile service provisioning function shortens the service provisioning duration from weeks to minutes, greatly improving the provisioning efficiency. Second, the bandwidth on demand (BoD) capability will support WOM to provide the optimal solution with high bandwidth and low costs for various industries in Chile. Third, the latency map will help to achieve visualized and marketable latency. Fourth, Huawei iMaster NCE enables Service Level Agreement (SLA) analysis to help WOM provide deterministic SLA assurance for customers. Fifth, the availability assurance feature will identify and visualize service risks, further ensuring service stability and improving customer satisfaction.

With the rapid development of Latin America, a new digital center will certainly be in place in Latin America. According to Edison, the cooperation between Huawei and WOM will lead the future of optical network construction. WOM will deepen cooperation with Huawei to continuously develop optical networks towards intelligence and automation, and make the next-generation ADN the foundation for the digital transformation and economic development of various industries in Chile.
