Telia Eesti, a leading mobile operator in Estonia and a subsidiary of Swedish telecom group Telia Company said it has started building a solar park to power up its data centre in Laagri, a suburb near the capital city Tallinn.

The Operator has six data centers and the data center in Laagri is the first to use solar energy. The solar park will be built by Pro-Solar and will be completed by the end of the summer. This year, Telia plans to implement a similar solution in several mobile base stations. Next year, it plans to build a solar station in the small town of Uuemõisa

Data centers are objects with very high electricity consumption, and solar energy is an environmentally friendly way to optimize energy consumption, said the Operator.

Telia Eesti said it will only use green energy, i.e energy that is produced in a sustainable and responsible way, from 2026. In addition, Telia has been using the heat generated by its server parks for many years. Instead of spending additional energy on cooling the data center, the heat generated is used to heat the office buildings of Telia Sõle Street and Sõpruse Boulevard and several other adjacent buildings.

Of course, the prerequisite for building a solar park is the existence of a suitable area, such as a plot or roof surface. Next to the camp data center, there is a plot of the right size where it was possible to install solar panels.
