A1 Telekom Austria recently conducted the first 5G live data connection in the lower Austrian town of Gmünd.

Together with technology partner Nokia, A1 has equipped three transmitters with the upcoming 5G technology, ensuring future 5G coverage of the rural urban area of the community. This live call on the A1 network represents the next milestone on the way to the new mobile generation.

5G cells are not only characterized by peak data rates up to 10 Gbps, but also fast latencies and extremely low power consumption. 5G creates the basis for real-time communication between mobile devices and thus for innovations in areas such as mobility, transport or Industry 4.0.

The 5G network implemented in Gmünd uses 3.5 GHz frequencies to be auctioned and MMimo technology, which significantly increases mobile network throughput, capacity and coverage.

Marcus Grausam, CEO, A1
The new 5G mobile communications generation is another big step in the direction of a digital future. We chose Gmünd as part of the first 5G data transfer, as the benefits of 5G will come to bear in rural communities. With ultra-fast mobile broadband we are able to overcome spatial distances and the same location disadvantages away from urban areas.

Peter Wukuwits, MD of Nokia Austria
With the connectivity via 5G, A1 and Nokia are once again demonstrating their technological leadership in the area of mobile communications. The 5G network in Gmünd is the first step in a future commercial 5G implementation in Austria. Together with A1, we are pleased to be making an important contribution to the rapid introduction of 5G in Austria.
