SK Telecom announced that the company has successfully demonstrated data transmission using SA (Standalone) 5G with Nokia, just five days after the new 5G NR standard was approved by the 3GPP.
The two have successfully carried out an end-to-end data transmission and Ultra-low latency data processing using solely the 3GPP-approved SA 5G standard at the Nokia Lab in Wroclaw, Poland. At the trial site, the two companies verified the feasibility of various applications based on SA 5G such as Virtual Reality(VR), Ultra-HD video, Autonomous driving and Smart Factory.
SA 5G relies solely on 5G for data transmission, without depending on 4G, whereas NSA (Non Standalone) 5G uses both the LTE and 5G networks. After the official announcement of SA 5G as the new 5G standard, the two companies swiftly came up with test products aligned with the SA specifications for their base stations.
SK Telecom said it has been developing 5G technologies based on both NSA and SA standards.
