Vinaphone, a leading mobile operator in Vietnam and mobile payments company Fortumo partner to launch carrier billing on Google Play.
The partnership will allow 20 million Vinaphone subscribers in Vietnam to now pay for apps and in-app content in the app store using their airtime balance.
While over 40% of Vietnamese already have a smartphone, credit card ownership in the country is below 2%. This means carrier billing greatly grows the amount of people who can make online payments on Google Play. More information on the mobile payments ecosystem of Vietnam can be found from Fortumo’s Asia market report.
Fortumo will also provide Vinaphone access to Fortumo Insight, a statistics and data analytics platform that helps carriers track and analyze the performance of Google Play. This data can then be used to make improvements to the payment infrastructure as well as measure the effectiveness of marketing campaigns promoting Google Play account activations and payments.
Fortumo said it now enables Google Play payments for all four major Vietnamese mobile operators: in addition to Vinaphone, the company has already integrated the Google Play payment infrastructure for the mobile operators Viettel, Mobifone and Vietnamobile.

Vietnam is one of Asia’s fastest growing markets for mobile services. Vinaphone has been able to successfully capitalize on this expansion and enabling Google Play for carrier billing is the logical step for Vinaphone to accelerate the growth further.
