French telecoms operators Orange and Bouygues have confirmed that they are in talks over a possible merger. Orange said in a statement that, "the group is exploring the opportunities available within the French telecoms market, while keeping in mind that its investments and its solid position afford it a total independence in its approach."

In a separate statement, Bouygues Telecom notes that “it is interested in opportunities that would enable it to bolster its long-term presence in the telecoms sector.”

At the same time, Bouygues Telecom said that it had returned to growth following its transformation initiatives and the development of its digital services strategies.
