UK-based Vodafone confirmed last Friday that it is in early stage discussions with the US-based cable giant Liberty Global regarding the potential acquisition of certain overlapping continental European assets owned by Liberty Global.

FT earlier reported that the negotiation is "likely to involve the two companies’ holdings in the UK, Germany and other parts of Europe", citing people informed on the talks.

Vodafone added that, "There is no certainty that any transaction will be agreed, nor as to the terms, timing or form of any transaction. Vodafone is not in discussion with Liberty Global regarding a combination of both companies."

Vodafone Group has mobile operations in 26 countries, partners with mobile networks in 49 more, and fixed broadband operations in 19 markets. The Operator has 529.1 million mobile customers and 19.3 million fixed broadband customers across India and also across its joint ventures and associates.
