du, a leading operator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) yesterday announced an increase of 35% and 11% respectively for its voice and data traffic over this year's Eid season, compared to last year. The data usage includes overall internet traffic, image sharing and video streaming over its network throughout Eid.

According to du, the highest surge in mobile traffic was recorded in Sharjah which saw traffic going up by 16% compared to the earlier week, followed by Abu Dhabi and Dubai which saw their data traffic increasing by 11% and 8%.

Messaging and collaboration amongst du customers increased by 21% over the Eid break compared to the preceeding week, indicating the increasing dependence on mobile communication during the festive season. While some social media platforms experienced a marked traffic increase, it was interesting to see that Facebook use remained the same before and during Eid. On the other hand, Instagram usage increased by 8.7% over the entire holiday period and recorded a 15% spike on Sunday alone, said du.
