A new study by Carphone Warehouse has revealed that 14.5 million selfies are now taken every day in the UK, with 4.3 million being shared via social media. The report notes that people aged 25-34 share more selfies than anyone else with one in four (24%) of these selfies captured at work and a third digitally enhanced in a bid for ‘self-ie improvement’. One in seven (13%) shares a selfie via social media sites, such as Instagram and Facebook, every day.
Interestingly, almost half (48 per cent) prepare for selfies in advance, with hair, make-up and backdrop being the top three things addressed. Even with preparation, over a third (35 per cent) of images are then filtered, altered or enhanced before being posted online. One in five over 45s admit to using a filter every time they take a selfie. Selfie sticks are also now used to capture one in seven (14 per cent) of the UK’s selfies, said the study.
