According to Telia Sweden's data, more Swedes than ever celebrated and connected during Christmas and New Year.

Surfing increased by 16 percent during the Christmas week and as much as 26 percent during the New Year week compared with the same period the year before. On the 5G network, the celebration exploded this year with a record increase of as much as 124 percent on average.

For 2021, Telia's data show that digital screens have become increasingly important to Swedes. Telia's data also shows that the 5G network has been used more than ever during Christmas and New Year. Compared with the last two months, 5G was used a full 66 percent more during the Christmas week and 77 percent more during the New Year week, and the people of Skåne and seniors (75+) were mostly 5G-connected. Compared with the full year, 5G surfing increased by 124 percent on average.

Seniors surf on 5G like never before, but during the Christmas and New Year week the calls also went hotter than usual for them, with 7 percent more and 13 percent longer calls on average compared to the full year. Calls abroad also trended this year, with an increase of 15 per cent in week 51 and 30 per cent in week 52 compared with the same weeks the year before. Here, the seniors surprise with an 80% increase in week 51.

Celebrating with family and friends at a distance was highly topical this year as well, which the result also indicates. Right now we are in a shift where more and more people get access to faster and more high-quality connection, something that creates better experiences and enables new digital services for all our customers around the country. In the long run, this will mean even higher demands on the networks, which is why our ongoing network modernization, where 4G is being upgraded and 5G is being expanded, is absolutely crucial.
