Green Smartphones, an Ofcom-accredited smartphone comparison site, yesterday released the results of their research into 5G user satisfaction in the UK [1].

The report aimed to discover whether or not the average consumer is satisfied with the performance of their 5G service, since making the switch from 4G. Were the benefits of 5G exaggerated, or are people happy with the speeds and coverage they are receiving?

To answer these questions, Green Smartphone commissioned OnePoll to survey 1000 UK 5G users, and assess their opinions of the technology’s performance on their mobile devices.

Results of the survey were as follows:

  • 80% of people are satisfied with the speeds and coverage offered by their 5G service.
  • Only 9% of people are dissatisfied, while a further 12% are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.
  • 33 percent of people said that 5G is faster than they expected.
  • Only 14 percent of people said that 5G is slower than they expected, while 53 percent of people thought that their 5G speeds were about as fast as they expected.

Given the recent media reports about 5G users being disappointed in the technology, we were quite surprised by these results. It’s clear that most end-users are happy with the speeds and coverage they’re getting using 5G in the UK.
For mobile carriers, this is further evidence that continued investment in 5G infrastructure is prudent, despite some people labelling the technology a write-off at this stage... Although 5G was overhyped in some areas - it has not been a massive IoT enabler, for example - it is providing faster speeds on a consistent basis, which people are willing to pay more for.
The merger of Three and Vodafone in the UK, if it goes ahead, is beginning to make more and more sense for the companies involved, as it would allow them to collectively bring forward more aggressive 5G investments, increasing their competitiveness against EE and O2.
