At the MWC 2021 that took place last week in Barcelona, leading subscriber data management solutions provider, Summa Networks, showcased its NextGen HSS®, a carrier-grade HSS / HLR / UDM solution. The Fast Mode spoke to Javier Martin, the company's CEO in a brief interview that discussed the overall MWC experience and its highlights, Summa Networks' key offerings in the subscriber data management space and the outlook for the telecoms sector for the rest of the year. 

How does it feel to be back at MWC?

After over a year of online meetings and virtually zero business meet-ups, it feels encouraging to be back at MWC 2021, our first physical event after a series of lockdowns. Although the show was smaller than what we are used to, the reduced amount of attendees and exhibition surface actually increased the time available for both delegates and exhibitors to interact with each other. For Summa Networks, meeting customers and visitors face-to-face has again proven to be more effective than a digital-only event, and we feel very privileged to have been able to attend this event in person.

What’s your showcase theme this year, and what key technologies did you exhibit/discuss?

Summa Networks has developed an advanced HSS and HLR software that enables mobile networks to evolve to 5G, with the implementation of a UDR / UDM architecture. Our 5G roadmap and the new functionalities that have been added to our subscriber data management suite - 5G NSA (Release 15 compliant), EIR, DNS/ENUM, VoLTE/VoWiFi support, AAA for Diameter and cloud-native deployment support - are particularly what caught our visitors' attention.

Our flexible product covers the business needs of mobile (virtual) operators, IoT solutions providers and Private LTE networks operators, thanks to a feature-rich, yet cost-effective proposition that includes:

  • The seamless handling of subscribers data between 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G - enabled by an LTE HSS, IMS HSS and HLR in a single piece of software;
  • A broad set of features including IMSI-reuse, multi-IMSI, multi-SIM, steering of roaming, supplementary services, etc;
  • VoLTE and VoWifi support;
  • AAA provided on a standalone basis or integrated with diameter, to avoid the need for an additional AAA server;
  • Flexible deployment models: bare-metal, virtualized, public cloud or cloud-native;
  • An intuitive GUI for fast subscriber provisioning and full set of APIs for external integrations;
  • A roadmap open to customer needs; and
  • eSIM compatibility

What’s your outlook for telecoms for the rest of 2021?

Certain trends observed at MWC have confirmed the need for the industry to evolve to 5G, with the ecosystem around 5G networks kept in mind. In this respect, I think that 5G NSA will be the new buzzword, as it enables operators worldwide to accelerate their path to 5G as all the components around the core mobile network evolve as well.

Cloud-native enablement is also a trend we are going to increasingly see in telecoms. The ability to deliver faster releases, greater ease of management and reduced costs while avoiding vendor lock-ins will present a competitive advantage for companies that offer these.
