Opera Browser Adds Free Built-in VPN with 256-bit Encryption

Opera has unveiled a free VPN client with unlimited data usage in its newest developer version, enabling users to access region-restricted websites and shield their browsing when they are on public Wi-Fi. Even though the built-in VPN with 256-bit encryption is free, Opera claims that it offers the same solutions as paid VPNs.

According to Opera, the client can hide users' IP address, replacing an IP address with a virtual IP address, so it’s harder for sites to track users' location and identify their computer. In addition to privacy, it also provides security when internet is accessed using public Wi-Fi where intruders can easily sniff data.

In this developer release, users can choose from one of three virtual locations - USA, Canada and Germany - but more locations will be available in the stable version, it said.

"To activate the VPN in the developer version of the Opera browser, click the “O” menu, select “Settings” (or “Preferences” on Mac), choose “Privacy & Security” and then toggle the free VPN on. An icon will appear in the browser address field, from which you can see and change your location, check whether your IP is exposed and review how much data you have consumed through the VPN servers."

By adding a free, unlimited VPN directly into the browser, no additional download or extensions from an unknown third-party provider are necessary. So, today, our Opera desktop users get a handy way to boost their online privacy, as well as easier access to all their favorite online content no matter where they are.
