SK Telecom yesterday announced that it will establish an AI governance (decision-making system) that sets the system for managing AI technology and the values pursued in order to become a global AI company.
As generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology develops rapidly, the need for a regulatory system for AI technology is being raised globally. In order to ensure the reliability and safety of AI, SKT is proactively implementing an AI decision-making system for corporate management.
In particular, SKT plans to utilize AI governance to ensure the reliability and safety of AI so that the AI pyramid strategy can have strong execution power. The AI pyramid strategy being pursued by SKT is to improve industry and daily life through 'self-reinforcement', which is to advance internal AI technology in three areas: AI infrastructure, AIX, and AI service, and 'cooperation' centered on external alliances. The idea is to innovate.

Establishment of AI governance process.
SKT plans to first review domestic and international AI-related laws/systems and global trends to establish AI governance standards, redefine AI pursuit values and establish business guidelines within March. Specifically, we plan to create internal standards that SKT members must adhere to in the process of developing and operating AI technology and services.
SKT has already established AI pursuing values in 2021 with 'people-centered AI' as its core philosophy. SKT's AI personal assistant service A. also complied with this and launched in 2022. SKT plans to further advance the value of AI by considering the company's strategy and external environment.
SKT operates a task force (TF) in which company-wide AI technology and service organizations participate to create a dedicated AI governance organization. The head of the task force will be Jae-heon Jeong, in charge of external cooperation, who oversees ESG, legal affairs, CR, etc., and will specify the organization and role dedicated to AI governance.
SKT establishes an AI governance process so that AI governance can be applied to SKT's management system and a virtuous cycle of diagnosis and improvement can be achieved through continuous monitoring. To this end, we plan to form an external advisory group from academia and industry and listen to the voices of various external experts.
