In the vast expanse of Mongolia, where the winds whisper across the steppes and the modern world collides with ancient traditions, a quiet revolution is underway. It's not the kind that makes headlines or shakes governments, but rather one that shapes the future of a nation through the minds and dreams of its young girls. This revolution is Girls Code, a beacon of hope illuminating the path for girls from vulnerable backgrounds to enter the world of coding and technology.

I was the first female leader of the Communications and Information Technology Authority of Mongolia and founded Girls Code in 2021 in response to a pressing need. In a country where only three percent of university graduates pursue careers in IT, and a mere 0.8 percent of female software engineers receive training, the disparity in gender representation in the technology sector is stark. Yet, against this backdrop, Mongolia envisions itself as a "Digital Nation," embracing the opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution and digital transformation.

The journey of Girls Code has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. Establishing the program encountered major obstacles, from garnering support and resources to overcoming deep-rooted societal perceptions about women in tech. Yet, fueled by passion and determination, Girls Code persevered, driven by the belief that every girl, regardless of her background, deserves a chance to thrive in the digital age.

One of the fundamental pillars of Girls Code is its recognition of the transformative power of education. The program provides foundational knowledge and skills in programming, opening doors to a world of possibilities for its participants. Moreover, Girls Code goes beyond mere instruction, offering support for further studies in computer science at foreign universities and colleges. Through initiatives like Internship, Mentorship, and Networking, Girls Code equips girls not only with technical skills but also with the confidence and connections to succeed in the competitive field of technology.

The impact of Girls Code extends far beyond the individual participants. As more girls enter the technology sector, the entire industry stands to benefit. Research has shown that diverse teams are more innovative and perform better, yet women remain significantly underrepresented in tech companies worldwide. By breaking down barriers and creating pathways for girls from diverse backgrounds, Girls Code contributes to a more inclusive and dynamic tech ecosystem, enriching the industry with fresh perspectives and talents.

However, the road to gender equality in the technology sector is fraught with challenges. Deep-seated stereotypes, lack of access to education and opportunities, and systemic biases continue to hinder the full participation of women in tech. To address these barriers, concerted efforts are needed at all levels, from grassroots initiatives like Girls Code to corporate policies and government interventions. Only through collective action can we create a future where every girl has the opportunity to pursue her passion and fulfill her potential in the world of technology.

As we look ahead to the future of coding and technology, one cannot ignore the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI). The emergence of AI promises to revolutionize the way we work, communicate, and live. Yet, the question remains: who will shape the future of AI? Without greater female representation in the technology sector, we risk perpetuating existing biases and inequalities in AI systems. Girls Code plays a vital role in ensuring that girls have a seat at the table, shaping the development and deployment of AI technologies with their insights and expertise.

In just a few short years, Girls Code has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for girls across Mongolia. With 80 graduates hailing from all corners of the country, including some who have achieved remarkable milestones like becoming the youngest CISCO certified network associate in Mongolia, the impact of the program reverberates far and wide. As we celebrate these achievements, let us recommit ourselves to the vision of a future where every girl has the opportunity to code her own destiny, shaping a world that is more inclusive, innovative, and equitable for all.

As Girls Code continues to expand its reach and impact, it faces new challenges and opportunities. The program is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where girls can thrive and pursue their passion for technology. With the support of government, corporate partners, and the broader community, Girls Code aims to empower even more girls from vulnerable backgrounds, unlocking their potential and transforming their lives through the power of code.

In conclusion, Girls Code is not just a program; it is a movement that is reshaping the landscape of the technology sector in Mongolia. By providing girls with the skills, opportunities, and support they need to succeed in tech, Girls Code is not only bridging the gender gap but also driving innovation, diversity, and inclusion in the digital age. As we look to the future, let us continue to champion initiatives like Girls Code and empower girls everywhere to dream big, break barriers, and change the world, one line of code at a time.
