Spanish quad-play operator, Vodafone announced that it will be updating its HFC network to DOCSIS 3.1 to offer its customers symmetrical speeds and upload speeds greater than 1Gbps.

The Operator will also simultaneously deploy additional fiber using an integrated platform for cable and FTTH that will will enable it to provide a choice of HFC or FTTH to new housing developments.

The network upgrade will enable Vodafone customers to enjoy a faster data service, as well as the possibility of adding new channels to Vodafone TV including all 4K capacity.

The upgrade involves a new architecture which will increase of the available spectrum and the change of modulation, enabling the bandwidth increases per client. In addition, the new architecture is expected to also improve operational and network quality.

The current technological standard will only allow for download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and the industry continues to work on the evolution of DOCSIS to raise the speed of data upload in the network and respond to the demand that may arise in the future. The upgrade of the network has already begun in the main cities and will extend to the whole territory during the next 24 months.
