ZTE announced that it will establish a large vIMS network (virtual IP multimedia subsystem) for Telefonica in Latin America that will support VoLTE and VoWiFi services in seven countries, namely Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Uruguay.

In view of the rapid development of Telefónica's LTE services, the introduction of VoLTE and VoWiFi services plays an important role in operation and development, said ZTE. The solution is provided as a VNF (Virtual Network Function) via the virtualization infrastructure of ZTE.

ZTE claims that its vIMS solution provides profitable carrier-level capabilities in terms of product performance, security, and reliability. It enables seamless integration with the existing networks of Telefónica and represents the first step in Telefónica's UNICA virtualization program.

After thorough tests a smooth migration to the Infra-Cloud capabilities of UNICA is to be achieved. ZTE is already working with Telefónica as an important provider of NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and has already implemented onboarding capabilities through the UNICA Infra solution.

Xu Ziyang, ZTE's Telecom Cloud and Core Network Products president
VIMS is part of ZTE's Cloud UniCore solution, which provides first-class and practical virtualization solutions for Telefónica. We are cooperating with Telefónica to ensure a smooth integration of our IMS NFV into the UNICA Infra-Cloud platform.
