Finnish operator Sonera has recently signed an agreement with energy group Fortum for recycling of the waste heat from its new ultra-modern and energy-efficient data centre in Helsinki for district heating in the town of Espoo, Finland’s second largest city.

The construction of the Finland’s largest datacenter which is scheduled for completion at the end of 2017 will support Sonera’s customers in business digitalisation by providing reliable cloud services and IoT (Internet of Things) capacity. The centre will be directly connected to major global cloud services and will only use electricity produced from renewable energy sources.

When completed the 24 MW datacentre will be more than 30 000 sq m and accommodate up to 200 000 servers.

Pasi Miettinen, Head of Sonera’s Real Estate unit, says “Our data centre will generate up to 200GWh heat a year. Our goal is to recycle a minimum of 80 per cent of the heat generated, and the MoU is the foundation for us to meet that goal."
