Deutsche Telekom-owned operator, T-Mobile and Huawei demonstrated for the first time in Austria, LTE Advanced Pro technology, reaching speeds of 2Gbps.The 4.5G live test took place in the T-Center in Vienna.

T-Mobile Austria said LTE Advanced Pro is the precursor to 5G (successor to 4G / LTE) and is intended to hit the market in 2018.

The speeds were archived using the combination of three major technologies, 4x4 MIMO, Carrier Aggregation and 256 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). By combining these technologies a higher transmission speed is possible not only for the individual but for a variety of users, because it significantly increases the capacity of the radio cells.

During the trial, 4x4 MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) were used to enable higher data rates via parallel transfer of data over multiple channels to both the transmitting station and the receiving device on the same frequency spectrum.

At the same time, Carrier Aggregation allowed multiple frequencies to be bundled - 20MHz of the 800MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz-, 2.1GHz band and 2.6 GHz band. The advantage of Carrier Aggregation is that the existing infrastructure can be used to avoid lengthy and costly upgrades.

In addition, with the 256 QAM (currently 64 QAM) technology, a 30 percent higher data transfer can be achieved over the same mobile channel, noted T-Mobile.
