Tampnet has selected Ericsson to upgrade the operator’s existing 2G network in the Gulf of Mexico with 4G/LTE coverage to support the region’s oil and gas industry, its resellers and roaming partners.

Headquartered in Norway, Tampnet is the world’s leading telecommunications operator for subsea fiber- and wireless 4G LTE-based data communication for the offshore oil and gas industry. Tampnet operates offshore telecom infrastructure in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, and more than 250 oil and gas installations, mobile rigs and vessels receive high-speed data communication services from the company.

Ericsson’s solution will replace Tampnet’s existing equipment and includes Ericsson 4G/LTE Access and Virtual Evolved Packet Core, while also upgrading the microwave backhaul with Ericsson’s MINI-LINK. The upgrade will also include deployment of Ericsson’s OpenStack based Cloud Execution Environment.

Per Helge Svensson, CEO, Tampnet Group
Our customer base is one of the most demanding industries in the world, and we are certain that Ericsson’s solution will enable us and our customers to develop innovative solutions that will increase effectiveness, productivity, welfare and safety for the platforms, drilling rigs and general workforce offshore.

Rima Qureshi, Head of Region North America, Ericsson
Ericsson’s Virtual Evolved Packet Core together with MINI-LINK microwave portfolio offer Tampnet a highly scalable network, with remote configuration, lower site rental and easy capacity upgrades using software licenses.
