The largest mobile operator in the Netherlands, KPN announced that it has obtained license extension for its digital ether television (Digitenne) service until the 1st of February 2030.  KPN via its subsidiary DVB BV will be using the new broadcasting license to operate its Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestial (DVB-T) service in the country.

The award by the country's Radiocommunications Agency (Agentschap Telecom) extends the current license which expires on the 31st of January 2017.

KPN wants to further develop Digitenne as an innovative offering in its TV-range - next to IPTV and Play by KPN - based on the new technology DVB-T2. KPN expects that watching TV in HD quality via Digitenne will continue to fulfill specific customer needs going forward.

Apart from enabling HD broadcasts over the air, transition to DVB-T2 is also necessary due to the fact that from 2020 onwards the 700MHz band, which is currently used for terrestrial television will be deployed for mobile communications.
