The second largest mobile operator in the US, AT&T has certified Wistron NeWeb(WNC)’s Cat-1 LTE Modules to its range of devices supporting a broad range of Internet of Things(IoT) applications. AT&T and WNC have jointly developed a new Cat-1 Module to help businesses lower costs and improve device performance.

The Cat-1 Module which is a single mode module, will be eligible for firmware updates to support LTE Cat-M1, part of the LTE-M standard in 2017.  AT&T plans to trial the Cat-M1 network which is specifically built for Low Power Wide Area IoT later this year. The technology extends coverage and reduces battery consumption. In addition, WNC said that it will issue firmware updates that will support the 3GPP Power Saving Mode.

The operator and WNC also introduced a new Cat 4 Module that supports 3G fallback and GPS. The module uses an industry standard surface-mount package specified by the ETSI to help companies to build IoT devices that easily interchange modules for different uses.

Chun Lee, head of the Global Business Development Division, WNC
The modules are the perfect solution for IoT connectivity. They are the smallest AT&T-approved Cat-1 modules and offer the most flexibility for compact LTE IoT devices.

Chris Penrose, senior vice president, AT&T Internet of Things Solutions
Our customers will be able to deploy a wide range of IoT solutions more efficiently and upgrade to Cat-M1. Our Smart Cities, Industrial Enterprises and wearables customers are eager to take advantage of these new capabilities.
