NTT DOCOMO has granted Huawei a license covering standard-essential patents for wireless communications, adding Huawei to more than 10 other companies who have been granted the license. The license, said the company, will be extended to more companies in future.

NTT DOCOMO claims that over the last two years, it has been one of the world-leading companies engaged in the research and development of mobile network and service technologies for systems based on the W-CDMA, LTE, LTE-A and 5G standards. As a result, the operator now possesses more than 5,300 standard-essential patents for W-CDMA, LTE and LTE-A standards.

NTT DOCOMO receives licensing fees for its standard-essential patents via both patent pools and directly from individual companies. Under the patent pool system, interrelated standard-essential patents are licensed together by the patent holders.
