HKT Completes New HSS/VoLTE Network Core Migration

Hong Kong's largest mobile operator, HKT has successfully completed what it says is the world’s first Home Subscriber Server (HSS)/VoLTE cutover, implemented in partnership with Huawei. The VoLTE network migration encompassed IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and circuit switched domains, including the core of 2G/3G/4G networks.

The migration of 2G/3G/4G core networks to the new core network paves way for the full integration of the two mobile core networks of HKT and its newly acquired unit, CSL. The newly built integrated core network is seen as a strategic move by the Operator to unify user experience with a homogenous and simplified service offering.

According to Huawei, the first migration was the most critical and difficult in the entire integration as a live, dynamic database for several million CSL subscribers had to be transferred from the HSS. The entire network integration is expected to be completed in 2016.

Peter Lam, Managing Director of HKT's Engineering
The migration is a significant milestone in our efforts to present the most state-of-the-art mobile platform for network evolution and service excellence.

Wang Yongde, Vice President of Huawei's Core Network Product Line
The network migration project required the convergence of packet switched, circuit switched and, most notably, IMS domains.
