US cable operator, Comcast has recently installed what the company believes is the world’s first DOCSIS 3.1 modem in a residential home at the Philadelphia area. The DOCSIS 3.1 modem will enable the delivery of gigabit speed broadband over the hybrid fiber coaxial(HFC) network.
According to Comcast, DOCSIS 3.1 is backward-compatible with existing networks which allows users to upgrade their service without Comcast having to replace existing cable wiring.
The operator plans to continue expanding the trials to additional locations in Pennsylvania, Northern California and Atlanta, Georgia. The operator said that it will be rolling out the service in several parts of the country before the end of 2016.
