Leading semiconductor firm, Freescale and South Korean operator's research arm, KDDI R&D Labs have joined as Silver members of the Open Network for NFV (OPNFV) Project, a carrier-grade open source flexible platform intended to accelerate the introduction of new products and services using Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). OPNFV also announced the appointment of Morgan Richomme to its Board of Directors as the first technical community representative.

Launched just one year ago, the OPNFV project, to date boasts a total of 19 Platinum and 36 Silver member companies.

Both companies are expected to play a prominent role in the project. Freescale Semiconductor manufactures multicore processors based on ARM technology to enable secure, embedded processing solutions for IoT, while KDDI R&D Labs conducts research and development on next-generation information and communication technologies in a wide range of fields, from mobile wireless to social media analytics.

Sam Fuller, director of strategy for Freescale’s Digital Networking group
The OPNFV platform helps ensure carriers have access to the best silicon, software and system technologies for building next-generation networks, and Freescale is pleased to join the OPNFV project to contribute our processing and networking expertise in support of the OPNFV project’s goals.

Morgan Richomme, NFV architect, Orange
OPNFV is unique in that it combines both the Cloud IT and traditional telecoms industries, which are both necessary to solve NFV. It facilitates broad collaboration in building a flexible platform for NFV in an industry on the precipice of transformation.
