Sprint announced that it plans to deploy 4G LTE service in 279 underground New York City subway stations - the largest rapid transit system in the world. The project which is set to be completed by 2017, is expected to serve six million riders every day across the boroughs of Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx, said Scott Santi, Sprint's Regional Vice President, Network.

The deployment includes the use of 1.9GHz and 800MHz spectrum in each station. Sprint will be deploying 2.5GHz in select high-traffic stations in Midtown and Queens for even faster data speeds at those stations. The fourth largest mobile operator in the US claims that in the past three months alone, it turned up 36 stations, bringing its current total station count as of the 12th of October to 83.
